For the Artegiro Artist Residency program 2011 in Montefiascone Italy, Llewellyn Skye worked on an ambitious project about Italian migration to the sugar cane country of Queensland, and in particular, from Conzano (AL) to Ingham. ‘Sugar’ shines a light on this little told chapter of Australia’s history, through an exploration of the people who came halfway around the world to toil and struggle in Queensland’s cane fields, facing unimaginable hardships. Skye gathered images, sounds, photographs and stories, producing a series of portraits reflecting the life of the Italian community who live in Queensland's sugar cane country.
