Llewellyn Skye, born in Gosford, NSW, Australia, and known simply as Skye. Raised in Sydney, Skye completed her BFA at the National Art School, followed by further study at the Sydney Gallery School. Now living and working on the Gold Coast, Skye is a full time artist as well as raising her young family.
Exhibiting in over 50 exhibitions and 10 solo shows, awarded the BLA Award and highly commended in the John Olsen drawing prize, a painting residency in Italy and various notable public commissions. With a strong background in drawing, Skye works predominately with oil paint, also using acrylics and sprays.
Taking inspiration from nature, poetry and lyrics, Skye’s effervescent, expressive works are rendered with confident brush strokes in colour against dark and muted backgrounds. The work, which marries abstraction and expressionism, mirrors the sweetness and inevitable pain of the ardor of young romance, which, like the springtime, blooms with vigor but soon betrays its fragility. Skye’s work recognises that with change and loss comes a darkness. But it also affirms the need to struggle to live in the moments, however fleeting, of beauty and light.
Llewellyn Skye’s work can be found in public and private collections throughout Australia and abroad.
